Punk rock quartet Triple Lutz dropped the newest single, “Don’t Wake Daddy,” on Friday as part of the rollout for their debut album In the Hands of an Angry Mob.
The Portland-based band simultaneously released an accompanying music video that they have said is part of a larger musical film they made, inspired by the 1979 action thriller The Warriors.
The lyrics take the piss out of those who invoke their religion to justify hatred and crimes against humanity, from religious leaders to powerful politicians. The song’s viewpoint is that this makes them unworthy of God’s love, with one hook saying, “If your God is really on His way back / I think you better run.” It’s quite biting and complements the music well.
The instrumentation features all the hallmarks of a good punk track. The bass is prominent in the mix, the guitar riff brings a rowdy energy, the drumming strikes a good balance between heavy snares and cymbals, and the lead vocals are brash and commanding.
“Don’t Wake Daddy” is a good representation of the band’s sound, which they describe as “Tonya Hardingcore.” It’s delightfully defiant and moves at a quick pace, making for a great tease for the upcoming album and movie, which are both set to release June 5.
