Known for their distinctive “northern funk soul” sound blending funk, hip hop, soul, rock, and psychedelia, Warrington, UK-based band WINACHI return with their latest single, “STATE OF MIND.”
Formerly known as The Winachi Tribe, WINACHI is comprised of six core members: Liam Croker (vocals), Antony Egerton (keyboards/programming), Inder Goldfinger (percussion), Jamie McGregor (lead guitar), Ritchie Rich (bass), and Mr. Whommit (drums). Together, they function like puzzle pieces, coming together to create music that is not only groove-forward but also message-driven.
“STATE OF MIND” sonically picks you up for the ride and is best experienced in motion, whether on a long walk, a long drive, or anywhere you need an extra jolt to keep going and keep moving. It meets the listener where they’re at, but carries an undeniable groove that’s hard not to feel energized by.
Lyrically, it makes space for the well-known concept of mind over matter, while not allowing external situations to cloud your mental space.
Lead singer and songwriter Croker says, “It’s a song that lyrically tackles the evolution of a man and the inner conflict that can cause. It’s about accepting that you’re naturally changing, especially mentally and emotionally, and that it’s okay to allow that to happen. It’s about coming to terms with the fact that you may not be as in control of what’s happening in and around your life as you once thought you were, but accepting that this is okay and allowing yourself the opportunity to grow and to let certain people and aspects of your life go in the process.”
Musically, “STATE OF MIND” carries a harder edge than the band’s previous releases. Driven by punchy bass, heavy drums, and more forceful guitars, WINACHI lean into a tougher sound while still holding onto their signature groove.
Goldfinger locks everything in with funky percussion licks, while Egerton builds an atmospheric backdrop on keys, with 90s-inspired piano lines adding a hit of nostalgia and lifting the chorus.
Vocally, Croker’s easy-going yet staccato delivery is both short and punchy, delivering the message with precision and poignancy while driving home WINACHI’s central mantra: it’s all just a state of mind.
Having toured worldwide with the likes of The Charlatans, Happy Mondays, The Furious Five, and The Sugarhill Gang, the band has also earned global airplay and press coverage from publications including the LA Times, LA Record, Louder Than War, KCRW, and BBC Radio 6 Music, among others.
With momentum like this, it’s exciting to see where WINACHI go next, especially at a time when the world feels like it could use more positivity and a stronger focus on not letting anything into your orbit that brings you down.
