NYC-based grunge-pop dup Sub*T have released their debut album How My Own Voice Sounds.
Made up of members Grace Bennett and Jade Alcantara, Sub*T was born online from a cross-fandom discussion between One Direction and The 1975 fans, leading to Grace and Jade meeting up IRL in the mosh-pit, and eventually ending up in the form of Sub*T that we see now, despite having no prior musical experience.
Following 2024’s Spring Skin EP, the duo has spent the last several years touring, writing, and rewriting to make an album that feels true to them both. “We’ve spent a long time with a lot of these songs,” says Sub*T. “We never really sat down with the intention of writing an album from the ground up, we’ve just been building our catalog for years.”
Along with the years spent touring and writing, Grace and Jade have spent that time developing their skills, both completely self-taught in guitar and songwriting. Both members of the band write on their own before coming together to work out how the vocals will sound layered. The result is that How My Own Voice Sounds feels more grounded than their previous EPs, and more well-rounded to boot. The album is moody and cathartic, with gorgeous vocal layers. In their own lyrical words, "they won't overcomplicate".
While some debut albums from up-and-coming acts can feel rushed and unready, giving How My Own Voice Sounds the space and time to essentially form itself was definitely to Sub*T’s benefit – and hopefully will give them the longevity they deserve.
