Swedish-American jazz artist Åsa Orbison drops "Lullaby of Birdland," a gentle yet groovy offering that combines a minimal instrumental style with sultry but lilting vocals. The honeyed track channels universality and diversity in a reflecction of her upcoming project, Swedish Jazz Standards, an eight-track collection that will reimagine beloved American jazz standards through Sweden’s rich jazz tradition.
A refreshing take on “Lullaby of Birdland” which is one of the defining jazz standards of the 1950s, composed by George Shearing with lyrics by George David Weiss. Named after the legendary New York club Birdland, the sophisticated production showcases an elegant yet free-flowing melody that feels intimate and expansive as a quiet nocturnal feel sets in with a captivating charm. Preserving the richness of the originality with a graceful interpretation, the track is as calming as it is vivid.
Produced by Roy Orbison Jr, and recorded in Nashville and developed in collaboration with world-renowned guitarist Ulf Wakenius, known from the Oscar Peterson quartet, the enriching and immersive project is shaped as a musical bridge between Sweden and the United States. Built on equal parts heritage and innovation, the project intertwines interpretation and original expression in an unmistakably contemporary yet timeless style.
Crafting a cultural dialogue between the two countries, the classic melodies transform into a refreshing sonic experience underpinned by Swedish lyrical interpretations as encapsulated by the warmth. Speaking of the project, he says, "My hope with this project is simply to invite listeners to hear these songs in a new way. Many people may not even realize that some of these melodies – jazz standards and jam session favorites have lyrics in English— and even fewer that they exist in Swedish, of course. When the words aren’t immediately understood, something else begins to shine —the melody, the phrasing, the feeling behind each note. It becomes a different kind of listening, where the music can speak on its own terms and perhaps in a way, sets the music free."
