Australian rapper YNG Martyr unveils unfiltered, unguarded album CHALANT, a collection laden with rawness, self-expression and plenty of gaming references underpinned by his signature freestyle rap approach.
The album's versatility and immersive nature is perfectly captured by focus track "BODYCOUNT," featuring 1900Rugrat, a hard-hitting trap cut built on, smooth bars and ambitious collaborative spirit. Other tracks like the modern rework of "MILKSHAKES," which transforms the Kelis' raunchy original into a distinct musical experience and the melodic blend of dense trap percussion and atmospheric tinges of "SINCE U BEEN GONE," tapping to themes of detachment, confidence, and self-authorship, further establish the widespread emotions explored in the project.
Capturing introspective moments amidst layers of energetic sonics, the unapologetic album teems with a sense of confidence and self-acceptance, as Martyr explains, "The current wave is to act non-chalant, like you don't give a fuck and you're too cool. I am a nerd, a dork, a dweeb — so CHALANT was born."
He adds, "I am not projecting, I am not hiding. I am creating from the centre of who I really am." The album is designed to feel total and immersive: "CHALANT is made to feel like you're opening up martyr.exe and experiencing everything through my lens. From overdosing when I was a kid, to playing Halo on a busted Xbox 360, to hitting stages across the world. It's all there."
With an intricate sound nestling jerk, rage, and new wave experimental rap upon old-school boom-bap lyricism, YNG Martyr offers a much-needed reminder to be happy and proud of who you are on CHALANT.
