Known for his ability to merge dancefloor-ready production with emotional nuance, JUJO sounds more intentional on Currents than ever before. It'a a journey through electronic music with influences that range from french house, straight through to old-school hip hop.. There's a wide-ranging list of collaborators throughout the project, each bringing their own unique influence to the release.
Sonically, Currents draws on the bright melodic language of 2010s house and festival dance music, but tempers that energy with restraint and introspection. There’s a fluidity running through the EP, with tracks ebbing and flowing rather than constantly chasing peaks. The title track and ‘For U’ nod to earlier phases of JUJO’s catalogue, reframed with a maturity that makes them feel less nostalgic and more reflective.
The EP’s closing moment, ‘iSLAND’, is where everything comes into focus. Written with Yung Shōgun and shaped during JUJO’s time touring Asia and later travelling solo through Thailand, the track carries a sense of physical and emotional distance. Built on warm grooves and understated house rhythms, it blends subtle R&B textures into a sound that feels restorative rather than explosive.
Lyrically and thematically, water imagery surfaces throughout the project, reinforcing ideas of movement, vulnerability and emotional clarity. By the time Currents reaches its end, there’s a feeling of resolution — a calm after the motion.
