Australian rapper YNG Martyr delivers “MILKSHAKES,” his take on Kelis’ early-2000s anthem infused his signature smooth flow while paying ode to the raw, raunchy energy of the original.
Blending timelessness with a modern twist, the track is an anthemic trap-style production rooted in a freestyle approach. Layering gritty beats with a nostalgic vibe, the track showcases a seamless sonic style that marries new wave experimental rap with old school boom-bap lyricism as YNG continues to prove his ability to shape and evolve his sound with each new release.
Speaking of the track, he says, “My producer Tate and I had been in the studio for hours trying to flip a nostalgic childhood hit into something gritty with Detroit drums. We were cycling through Gorillaz, all these old classics, nothing was hitting. We took a break, went for a walk to 7-Eleven in LA, and as soon as the doors slid open, Milkshake by Kelis starts playing. We just looked at each other like, 'Yeah, that's the one.' The whole song from there was basically a freestyle, just me locking in and letting it all spill out. That's what makes Milkshakes feel so raw."
With an authentic yet diverse musicality that continues to see him dominate the underground rap scene, this reimagined offering see YNG Martyr further cement his status as one of Australia's most respected rappers.
