A deep dive into Very Nice Person’s new single and video, “Underwater” [Video]

Malibu-based duo, Very Nice Person, has been making waves as they release their newest single, “Underwater.” Their unique sound and approach to production have been gaining traction.

Brothers Skyler and Davis Diamond, with a group of collaborators, have been pushing boundaries with their experimental music production.

Their breakout single “When the Sun Explodes” is featured on the GRAMMY award-winning album For The Birds: The Birdsong Project, Vol 2.

The mini-series inspired by their debut EP, When the Sun Explodes, was featured in worldwide film festivals. They performed at multiple music festivals and opened for Babe Rainbow on their US and Australian tours.

Recently, the duo released their first single of 2025 called “Trampoline.”

Upon releasing their newest single, “Underwater,” the band also dropped an accompanying music video directed by Ronald Peabody.

The video opens with a moody blue filter and an ocean-themed light fixture set against damask wallpaper, while the instrumental feedback hums like an old VHS coming to life. As the shots flick between rippling water and a burst of bubbles from someone diving in, the music unfolds.

A wave of vintage synths, industrial distortion, and catchy vocals takes hold. Overlays of layered imagery create a hazy, dreamlike effect that pulls the viewer deeper into the world of “Underwater.”

As smooth vocals enter, the track is stripped back for a moment, allowing the harmonies to drift over the crunchy electronic beat.

As the track progresses, the views shift to include warmer tones and distorted imagery while being overlaid with clips and silhouettes of Very Nice Person.

The music begins to shift, as though the listener has fully drifted under the surface. Close-ups of the artists are layered with colorful, flowing visuals. The music takes on a tender feeling, with exposed arpeggios and gentle vocals.

Twinkling synth rises and falls as the melody cascades down. The track feels weightless, while simultaneously sinking, as pitches bend and the visualization flicks between subjects.

As the word “underwater” surfaces through the haze, the blue filter returns, showing Diamond in the opening setting.

Musically, the synth parallels the inviting vocals, giving way to delayed chords as the track and video end.
