Berlin-based duo Nick & June have released their new single, “2017,” featuring The Antlers frontman Peter Silberman.
The latest track to be released from their upcoming album New Year’s Face, the track has been released alongside a music video that features old performance footage of the duo filmed with an old camcorder, giving both the video and the track a definite ‘vintage’ feel.
According to the duo’s Suzie Lou Kraft: “It’s good to occasionally ask yourself why your mind keeps wandering back to the past. Who’s still living in 2017?”
On working with Peter Silberman, Nick Wolf added, “Ever since I discovered The Antlers’ album Hospice back in 2009, I’ve been a huge fan of Peter and [the rest of] the band. To me, he’s one of the best songwriters of his generation. That we’d end up recording songs together…it still feels kind of crazy to me.”
The result of Kraft and Wolf breaking up and still choosing to work together on new music, “2017” is a hypnotic, ebbing track – the melody is gentle yet rich, and features the duo’s trademark paper-thin vocals. There is no urgency about the track at all; it doesn’t speed up or rush for even a second, the way it feels to look back on times since passed. Unlike the two other already-released New Year’s Face tracks, “2017” is a quiet meditation, unlike the obvious anger that both “Husband & Wife” (feat. Owen Pallett) and “Anthem” exude.
