Mexico City-based band Diles que no me maten have released the music video for their summer release “Tan Grande Nada,” alongside two physical reissues of their previous albums.
Diles que no me maten have re-released 2021’s La vida de alguien más – which features labelmate Mabe Fratti on cello – as well as 2023’s Obrigaggi via label imprint Moonlight Activities. Currently on tour throughout the US, the band has been enjoying recognition from wider audiences since the release of “Tan Grande Nada” as part of Mexican Summer’s Sitting on the Moon compilation.
Currently a five-piece band led by singer/poet/flautist Jonás Dérbez, the band also features brothers Raúl (drums) and Gerardo Ponce (guitar), Jerónimo Elizondo-García (guitar, clarinet), and Andrés Lupone (bass). Diles no que me maten have proven themselves as an international band to watch, having enjoyed status as local favourites since their Covid-era inception.
Created during lockdown, La vida de alguien más is the story of someone who “liberates themselves from personhood” and completely transforms, whereas the free-flowing Obrigaggi (a word made up by the band themselves) is an intimate portrait of the band as creators, which was recorded over the span of a week in a house in the jungle in Veracruz.
Originally released in August earlier this year, “Tan Grande Nada” is a somewhat difficult track, opening with fuzzy guitar and frantic jazz before the vocals come in with half-sung, half-spoken immediacy. It’s a track that needs several listens, but is definitely worth it to unpick all its complexities.
