Midwest-born artist Air Mail has released the second single from the Unearth series, “Wide Awake (a.m.)”.
The performing name of Niko Francis, Air Mail is known for his handmade, lo-fi style – both melancholic and melodic, with far-away vocals and nostalgia-laden acoustic guitars, Air Mail evokes something wistful and lost, much akin to the letters he sent home that inspired his performer pseudonym.
Pierced throughout with the mantra of “Because we, we are wide awake”, the song was written after reading news coming from Gaza as well as the LA wildfires, and is meant to be a meditation on connectedness and the collapse of familiar things. While the melody seems hopeful, the lyrics are introspective and circular, much like its title – they’re the ruminations of someone desperately wanting, but far away from the peace of sleep.
