Afro-Soul sensation Kenké has released a new offering, Ordinary is Spectacular Enough, a dynamic five-track EP that showcases her emotive songwriting and genre-defying sound. Kenké is based in Abuja, Nigeria, where her music draws deeply from the city's vibrant rhythms, as well as her own introspective experiences. Her latest project, Ordinary is Spectacular Enough, distributed by ONErpm and recorded in the kinetic city of Lagos, weaves together themes of loss, faith, and love overtop warm, soulful instrumentation, making for an emotive, diverse listen.
The EP opens with "Only One", which introduces the EP's lush, atmospheric sound with weaving guitars, rich bass, and lively rhythms underscoring Kenké's soaring vocals. The song acts as a powerful declaration of faith amidst industry pressures, as Kenké says, “I wrote this song around the time when it felt like so many people had opinions of how I should live as an artist in the industry. A lot of them felt dark". "I’m Sorry" captures the heartache of letting go, interlaced into bittersweet keyboards, flourishes of wistful guitars, and melancholic, yet graceful vocals. "The Problem with Man" is a vital, heartfelt closer which uses angelic backing vocals, powerful strings, and engaging, expansive vocals to a potent effect, while Kenké explores the complexities of human connection.
Ordinary is Spectacular Enough makes for a grounded, refreshing release from Nigeria's Kenké, as she delves into poignant themes such as self-belief, heart-ache, and more atop vivid instrumentation.
