South London-based artist-producer Richard James Jakubowski, the mind behind Coloured Paper Shapes, returns with “Playtime,” a soulful, sun-drenched indie-pop cut that captures the fleeting magic of escape.
Built on bouncy, Motown-inflected grooves and shimmering guitars, the track radiates warmth while nodding to that very specific moment when the night begins and anything feels possible.
Originally sparked by a scene from The Florida Project, “Playtime” channels the same kind of energy.
Jakubowski shares, “I wanted to write a song about that feeling of being able to let go. Whether we’re kids or adults, we have certain people or places that let us tap back into that carefree sense of play.” That sense of freedom pulses through the track’s playful arrangement, pairing jangly optimism with an undercurrent of yearning.
While it started out as a standalone idea, “Playtime” ended up slotting neatly into Jakubowski’s upcoming concept album Flamingos, a project set in a dive bar and exploring the ups and downs of routine, friendship, and nights out.
With this release, Coloured Paper Shapes leans into the kind of feel-good energy that reminds us it’s okay to switch off and just enjoy the moment.
