San Francisco-based, Australian-born alt-pop artist and producer Rohan has released his latest single, “Precious,” alongside an accompanying visualiser by Mark Kohr.
“Precious” very much sounds like an elevated version of the songs pet owners sing to their pets when they’re being cute—in the best way possible.
“Precious” comes out sounding both serene and ethereal, a hazy summer day song with a simple and endlessly relatable theme, interspersed with a somewhat unsettling synth “boom.” An attempt to invoke Billie Eilish’s signature soft-yet-uneasy style, “Precious” simultaneously manages to be both a cute song about a dog and an oddly ghostly-sounding, sparse soundscape.
Rohan sings, “You are my precious / not quite my kind / but I have found a way for words to make sense to you,” which is unabashedly sweet on its surface—but the vocal mix makes it sound distant and untouchable.
According to Rohan himself: “It’s really about unconditional love in its purest form. The kind that doesn’t ask for much back but still changes you… love can exist even when you’re wired completely differently from someone. Whether you’re a partner, a parent, a sibling, or a pet owner, that feeling of giving your whole heart without needing to explain yourself—that’s what this song is chasing.”
The visualiser for “Precious” was shot by Rohan’s longtime collaborator Mark Kohr (best known for his work with Shakira and Green Day) and features Bay Area landscapes such as open roads and quiet nature—and, of course, shots of Rohan’s dog Kosta—a lovely blend of stillness and motion.
