The mysterious West African electronic trio Lagos In Paris dropped their debut EP titled "We Are Lagos In Paris," a six-track odyssey that's as sonically unbounded as it is culturally rooted. Out on BLZ and Inside Records, this invective doesn't qualify as just music. It's a movement.
Recorded over three years and across multiple continents, from the sun-baked heat of Dakar and Accra to the neon sparkle of Paris and Abidjan, "We Are Lagos In Paris" sounds like a sonic passport kissed by every culture it has entered. Here, the trio of producers stretches and hardens their self-invented genre, Afraw, a loose amalgam of African rhythms, amapiano, house, techno, funk, disco, and reggae, among other influences.
The opener, "Mali Spirit," draws you in like a desert mirage, with the Ghanaian griot Stevo Atambire entwining G-Funk with Sahel blues in a hypnotic prayer. Then there's "Sinatanale," a liberation anthem that throbs with TSIE's groove-soaked defiance at once, both dancefloor and protest.
Fueled by spontaneity, DIY sensibility, and nomadic energy, "We Are Lagos In Paris" is a statement. This is a collective that builds worlds. And in this one, creativity knows no borders.
