British indie rock band Wet Leg show they are all in with their comeback with a new single, “CPR.”
Released Tuesday, the track is set to open their upcoming record “moisturizer,” their follow-up to their 2021 self-titled debut. It is their second single for this sophomore effort following “catch these fists.”
Henry Holmes’ drums and Ellis Durand’s bass provide a simple, danceable beat. This allows Josh Mobaraki’s rhythm guitar to truly shine during the chorus. But the drum fills and guitar solo from Hester Chambers in the bridge add a bit of spice, just for good measure. Rhian Teasdale mainly adopts a casual vocal delivery, evoking new wave artists like David Byrne and Sting.
The music does much of the heavy lifting, meaning the lyrics are kept simple as well. It describes a relationship where one person, the narrator, is so enamored with the other that they are all too eager to do whatever the other wants, often to their own detriment.
The chorus goes, “Put your mouth to mind in your CPR.” This means that the narrator is hoping that their partner will reward their willingness by showing that their acts of love are reciprocated.
“CPR” shows no signs of Wet Leg’s lifeline stopping anytime soon, and provides a great note for “moisturizer” to open on when it arrives July 11.
