Bon Bon Vivant embrace the haunting role of the “Sin Eater”

New Orleans-based, “storytelling troubadour” collective Bon Bon Vivant released their new single “Sin Eater.”

Working together since 2013, Bon Bon Vivant was formed in the French Quarter of New Orleans by frontwoman and songwriter Abigail Cosio alongside vocalist and saxophonist Jeremy Kelley. Bold and distinctive, Bon Bon Vivant has created an identity for itself through the tropes of classic Americana, indie rock, and the essence of Louisiana.

Having been awarded Best Emerging Artist of 2018 by Off Beat Magazine, Bon Bon Vivant are very clear about their need to perform live.

According to Abigail Cosio: “The reason we play music is that it’s transmutative; it’s one of the only things we have in humanity that you don’t have to process to feel. It’s a lightning rod to the most tender parts of us.”

A slow, smoky groove, “Sin Eater” features Abigail Cosio’s deep croon melting over a steady, four-on-the-floor bass, silky jazz-adjacent guitar, and a piercing sax solo—like a blend of Debbie Harry and Kate Bush.

Penned as a “song of devotion” inspired by the role of the “Sin Eater”—someone who symbolically takes on the sins of the dead to absolve them—the track is a “macabre love song… carrying the weight of another’s burden.”

This very much comes across in the lyrics, as Abigail Cosio sings "An American Psycho/I’m so compartmental/I will clean up the blood/and it won’t stain my love for you." The lyrics paint a picture of a deep, obsessive need to take care of another person, in a bloody, all-consuming manner.

The effect of “Sin Eater” lingers long after listening, slithering through your headphones with a lasting impact—you’ll find yourself humming “I’ll be your sin eater, oh my love” for hours afterward, caught in its hypnotic spell.
