Velvet Sun's new four-track EP, Empire, is the band's stunning return and bold new direction. Ethereal, rhythmically charged, and unapologetically immersive, "Empire" is a cinematic experience wrapped in indie rock mystique. Co-produced and engineered by Ferny Coipel at Shack North Studio, the project has the feel of Velvet Sun having entered some dreamscape, rewired the complete atmosphere, and returned with artifacts for the rest of us to listen to.

From that first note, it’s clear the band is growing. The sharp and layered production lets the band’s sound breathe and swell. A haunting beauty ripples through the EP, with shimmering textures and echoing melodies that feel intimate and massive. The epic track “Wait” (Track 2) showcases Velvet Sun’s knack for building tension and release. It has a slow-burn opening and a sense of anticipation, and then it rises into a sweeping crescendo that feels like it could fall into the sky at any time. The song mellows into a dreamy haze but carries emotional weight, including the push and pull of holding on and letting go. It’s the sort of track built for headphones, late-night drives, or slow-motion memories.

They each build on the previous "Empire" track, yet each also stands strong. There is a thematic undercurrent of transformation of reclaiming space and reshaping identity. Velvet Sun has poised itself on the raw heart laneways of vast, universal aspiration to rebuild and move forward, but it does so with poetic restraint and sonic grace. Working with Ferny Coipel is an obvious highlight. The engineering and production enhance them, interweaving ambient elements and luxurious instrumentation into a totality. The result is a contemporary, timeless EP, rooted and otherworldly. With "Empire," Velvet Sun is a new EP crafted with a mood, a moment, and a message. It’s a bold move into a new phase of creativity that seems highly personal and widely relatable. Listen, sure, absorb yourself.
