som som confronts shadows and light in new single, ‘Seasonal Depression’

som som, an indie producer and songwriter, is back right when we need him most with “Seasonal Depression”. This combo of emotional turmoil and listenable, catchy music has a mind-bending, ear-twisting magic. Creating hazy textures that draw on indie rock, dream pop, and indie pop, he creates an intimate and expansive sound at once, drawing listeners into a world where past regrets and lingering shadows coexist with glimmers of hope.

From the first note, “Seasonal Depression” establishes a melancholy but oddly soothing vibe. The song captures the burden of repressed feelings, past sins, and the physical discomfort of being trapped in cycles of negativity. But rather than wallowing in hopelessness, he manages to metamorphosize suffering into sound. The result is a cathartic listening experience that is as gripping as visceral.

Reminiscent of Dayglow, Wallows, Fontaines D.C., and Still Woozy, the song’s terrain is lushly produced, combining gauzy guitar riffs with a marshaling rhythm, a dynamic that reflects the pull and push of emotional battles. The lyrics read raw and deeply personal, yet universally relatable, an anthem for anyone whose own mind has ever been jailed.

But under the brooding mood, there’s a glimmer of hope. The song doesn’t linger solely on the weight of seasonal blues. It acknowledges them, embraces them, and, in the end, seeks a way through. Like sunlight breaking through a winter sky, “Seasonal Depression” finds beauty in vulnerability, aching through its pain. It guides listeners to hope there is always a path in our dimmest hours.

Som Som continues to perfect his trademark sound with every new release, infusing fun melodies into moving stories. Then there’s “Seasonal Depression,” another evidence of his knack for writing records that both sound good and feel honest, authentic, and sticky, attaching themselves to you long after the last sound evaporates.
