Kalaido’s “Midnight Diner Curry” serves up a soulful jazz feast with Sam Miles

Composer and producer Kalaido (the alias of Phoenix Glendinning) ventures into new territory with his latest single, “Midnight Diner Curry,” a lush, uncut jazz jaunt as cozy and welcoming as the after-dark meal that served as its inspiration. A preview of his forthcoming album In Praise of Shadows, this track features the irresistibly playful improvisational wizardry of tenor saxophonist Sam Miles, best known for his work with jazz-house crossover artist Berlioz.

A stark departure from the production-heavy soundscapes of Kalaido’s typical output, “Midnight Diner Curry” is reduced to its essence: live, uncut jazz. The absence of studio effects lets each note breathe, with Miles’s sax weaving complex melodies atop a fluid, organic arrangement. It has a spontaneous feel, almost like a conversation between old friends at a dark little diner, intimate, considered, and ho-hum utterly hypnotizing.

Rooted in respect for jazz traditionalism, Kalaido takes a raw, classic approach that showcases the versatility of his work as a composer and producer. The song is sleek but unpredictable, a reminder of the power of live instrumentation and unfiltered musical expression.

“Midnight Diner Curry” is a mood, a late-night escape, and a bold step into untested creative territory for Kaleido. Listeners steeped in contemporary jazz and freeform improvisation must return for seconds, hungry for every note.
