magenta’s “don’t mess with her hope” captures the fragile power of young love

“don’t mess with her hope,” the lead single off 'Angel,' her new EP, is a personal and stirring anthem from the Toronto-based alt-pop artist magenta. Known for her raw and emotive songwriting, magenta welcomes listeners into the soft, unvarnished moments of queer love where vulnerability meets subtle power.

Penned in the privacy of her university dorm, “don’t mess with her hope” offers a sincere entreaty draped in ethereal melodies. The heat of early relationships surges through the song: the highs and lows, the hope that serves as armor and a tenuous line tracing it all together. As magenta worked through her feelings in real time, the song emerged organically, later polished with the producer Joshua Northwood to create the warm, intimate vibe it has.

With a gentle yet commanding voice reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers and hints of Gigi Perez, magenta floats over a soft, melancholic soundscape that provides a space where listeners can see a reflection of themselves in her lyrics. Every word is like a whispered confession, truthful, heart-wrenching, and completely real.

'Angel' at large captures the raw beauty of love’s first stages, but “don’t mess with her hope” shines as its emotional heart and a truism that love especially queer love deserves protection. With this track, magenta carves herself further into the alt-pop space, showing that the most damning stories can sometimes be the ones that are delivered in whispers.
