New York’s newest alt-rock duo Gardenia capture raw energy and deeply personal storytelling on “Lana Del Rey,” which delves into the contradictions of nostalgia for an America that, while once beloved, is now seen through the lens of its flaws.
An alluring political anthem rooted in alt-rock instrumentals spanning fuzzy baselines, catchy drums, haunting vocals and introspective lyrics, the track paints a vivid picture of our collective modern life.
With production from underground rock legend Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Jeff Rosenstock, Gouge Away), “Lana Del Rey,” showcases Gardenia's ability to blend anthems rock sonics with raw storytelling.
Speaking of the track, they say “I didn’t want to write a political song at first, it was hard to convey how I felt without it sounding topical. So instead, I wrote as if America was someone you really wanted to have back, but you now understand what they did to you. That felt easier to grasp.”
The track is accompanied by cinematic visuals, directed by Tyler Bertram, filmed in Manhattan’s historic Upper East Side, paying homage to “how beautiful Americana can be, even when America is not.”
A powerful duo consisting of Ryan Zakin (vocals/bass) and Tamir Malik (drums),Gardenia are cementing their reputation as one of the fastest rising voices in the Brooklyn’s DIY rock scene.
