Captivating audiences across the globe, the Taiwanese emerging singer-songwriter SherryZ engages listeners with her expressive and dynamic debut album, Time. Amongst many impressive abilities, SherryZ demonstrates a unique versatility, blending classic R&B influences with modern experimental touches, guided by Golden Melody Award-nominated producer Chunho. With collaboration being an important factor in this project, the results are uniquely rare, with the outcome being an evocative collection of songs, where intricate production and dynamic songwriting take center stage.
The album’s closing track, “Once Again,” is a masterclass in raw emotional power and a bold departure from the rest of the album’s sonic palette. Featuring only SherryZ’s emotive vocals and simple piano patterns, the track strips away the lush, layered production of earlier songs to reveal a deeply personal and vulnerable moment. The decision to include “Once Again” wasn’t easy; SherryZ explained, “Chunho and I argued about whether it belonged on the album because it was so different, but ultimately, we realized it encapsulated the light I was searching for.” This daring choice underscores her ability to step into different territories, offering a stark yet fitting conclusion to the album’s themes of resilience and renewal.
“Love on Hold” showcases SherryZ’s flair for innovation. The song draws inspiration from Erykah Badu’s “On & On”, but twists it into something entirely her own, with shuttling synth tones and a menacing vibe that reflects the chaos of a fractured relationship. The quirky bassline from Sunset Rollercoaster’s Chen Hung Li adds a playful, unexpected texture, further highlighting Chunho’s experimental fingerprints.
With Time, SherryZ proves she is an artist unafraid to explore sounds while grounding her work in authentic storytelling.
