After almost a week’s worth of social media teases, indie rock outfit Japanese Breakfast finally returned Tuesday with their new single, “Orlando in Love.”
The song serves as the lead single for their upcoming fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), which will mark her first original release in four years following her acclaimed 2021 album Jubilee.
On “Orlando in Love,” frontwoman Michelle Zauner continues to prove her prowess as a musician and songwriter. The track solely consists of muted guitar strumming complemented by ethereal strings that mince no words about the album’s melancholic tone.
This feeling is echoed in the lyrics as well. Third-person narration gives a brief profile of Orlando, a poet mesmerized by the sea, to the point where he personifies it as a perfect woman calling his name.
Overall, Japanese Breakfast’s latest comeback is wistful and fleeting, clocking in at just over two minutes, and will have listeners begging for more. Luckily, nine more tracks are on the way—including a Jeff Bridges feature—with For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) scheduled for release on March 21.
