Scottish rockers Mogwai have been teasing their new album "The Bad Fire" over the last few months and ahead of its release on January 24th they have dropped a surprise track, "Fanzine Made of Flesh". The vocoder vocals, chiming guitar riffs, and twinkling synths set this song firmly in the band's pop style rather than the post-rock camp of their mythical origins.
The band's singer and lead guitarist Stuart Braithwaite has described it as sounding like Abba meets Swervedriver by way of Kraftwerk. There are moments that speak to all of these references and many more as the band career around in a musical genre cocktail and it's another intriguing addition to the album tracklisting already underpinned with the soaring, raucous "Lion Rumpus" and brooding, slow tension of "God Gets You Back".
Watch the Agnes Haus-directed video below now, inspired by the song's jumbled lyrical meaning to create a pseudo-film trailer made up of incongruent pieces with vague horror tones, emotional entanglement, and nods to weird art films from the ‘90s.
