South London based experimental soul artist McCabe paints a haunting exploration of mortality on “Killer of Mine,” which blends ethereal sonics and melancholic lyrics together for a complex listening experience.
Weaving together two intimate perspective, one from death's threshold, the other watching from its edges, the track draws from a deeply personal experience of witnessing a family member on their deathbed, juxtaposing the hushed hues of bittersweetness of honouring life's final moments with striking and luminous pianos with delicate balance.
Finding its beginning as a last-minute addition to his collaboration with producer Patrick James Fitzroy, the track soars with the addition of Berber's vocals making a compelling and profound anthem that feels vulnerable yet uplifting.
Speaking of the track, McCabe says, “I wrote ‘Killer Of Mine’ on the piano to an electronic clap beat, creating a gospel feel. It moved me to write about the inevitable demise of my family member, writing from the perspective of the mother passing on and the son watching the final moments. I teared up as I wrote the lyrics and melody which made me realise I had something special.’”
The track is elevated by cinematic visuals, with director Sam Perry adding his expert touch to capture a journey and tale of death through abstract imagery. With fluorescent lights and shadows fitting around each other with intricacy, the visuals match up to the honest yet vibrant soundscape.
With an intense but energetic musicality, McCabe who straddles the line between vintage soul and contemporary innovation within his refreshing and soulful pop-tinged style breaks down the barriers of genre as he steps into a new sonic chapter in his journey.
