Sam Uctas rewrites the rules in 'Redacted Lines' [Album]

In a half-done digital age, Sam Uctas imbues his new album, Redacted Lines, with a raw and exuberant character. Spanning nine tracks, the album blends guitar-based songwriting with experimental soundscapes, yielding a listening experience that is both nostalgic and confidently pushing back against contemporary industry standards.

Recorded on vintage TASCAM tape machines, Redacted Lines exhibits warmth and texture that digital audio’s sterile world could never reproduce. Sam Uctas, a lifelong guitarist who began playing at age seven, has looked to artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Frank Zappa for inspiration in developing a sound that balances virtuosity with soul. From soulful licks to psychedelic noise, Uctas infuses his love of analog imperfections into an entirely true sound.

Songs like “Falling Out” and “In Your Eyes” also reveal a melodic, emotionally resonant side of Uctas’ songwriting, with guitar lines that breathe and pulse with life. At the same time, exploratory pieces such as “Everything Is Becoming” and “VRBA” indulge in ambient, noise-daubed territory, extending what a song can be. Uctas describes these soundscapes as “time as a canvas, sounds as colours,” a way of thinking that transforms each track into an audiovisual painting.

Lyrically, Uctas’ influences run deep through the likes of Beat Generation poets and authors, including Jack Kerouac and Charles Bukowski. Every line is metered poetry, depicting moments of introspection and raw emotion that ground some of the album’s more abstract leanings.

Redacted Lines is an intimate art object that weighs nostalgia against innovation and leaves the listener adrift in its textured, imperfect beauty.
