British pop artist Mara Liddle has just dropped her new single, “hush hush.” Taking inspiration from romcoms and reality TV shows such as Love Island, the songwriter delves into how relationship dramas and love triangles are often exploited as a way to create addictive entertainment. As consumers we can often get sucked into this world, and start to normalize toxic behaviors, even mirroring them in our own relationships. The result is a cycle where the hyper-dramatized and manipulated content we see on our screens begins to distort our expectations of love and negatively impact our own lives.
Liddle shares, “My music is largely influenced by the digital age and media, the things that we see on Instagram or on TV, or the way that having a constant line of connection to someone can perpetuate anxiety in relationships. I liked the way that the line 'put it on the screen, everybody sees' followed on from the line 'caught you with my face on your screen' in my last single, 'girl of your dreams,' and the idea that we live our lives through what we see online.”
“Hush hush” is an intoxicating, dance-worthy track that comes alive with shimmering synths, bold beats and colorful melody, delivering a feel-good anthem that’s sure to stay on repeat in your head.
Offering the perfect conclusion to 2024, we can’t wait to see what else Mara Liddle has in store next year.
