Melody Federer gets vulnerable on new single ‘Knocked Up’

Indie singer-songwriter Melody Federer released her reflective new single, “Knocked Up,” on Thursday.

The song marks her third release of the year following the alternative rock-driven “Like My Whiskey” in June and the electronic-tinged “Footloose” in September.

“Knocked Up” sees Federer look back on her life choices and the ripple effects of them, most notably her decision to become a mother. With great detail, she recalls learning about her initial pregnancy and what people around her said to her during that time. However, she proves to have no regrets and concludes that it changed her life for the better.

Thematically, the song treads similar ground as her song “Raised” off her 2023 album Chapters from the Fairytale.

The song employs a subdued musical backdrop, with sparse guitars, pulsing bass, and gentle drums providing a minimalist feel. Federer’s vocal approach is also as understated as ever, as she allows herself to be overtaken by the music in the mix. This goes hand in hand with the idea that she has gladly let her child become the center of her world.

“Knocked Up” continues to assert Melody Federer’s talent and her willingness to wear her heart on her sleeve.
