Izza is best known for her invigorating dance pop gems filled with massive hooks, soulful vocals and energizing synthesizers. Her just released EP, Because I'm Blonde, is an expansive seven track pop explosion detailing the many misconceptions people have against someone based on their appearance. The EP also touches upon themes including new love intoxication, empowerment and embracing one's true self.
The EP begins with "Flavor", a seductive and alluring flirtatious musical moment with lyrics depicting all the senses used in dating. Then there is "Sweat", a fearless and unapologetic exploration of dance pop’s most catchy and confessional corners. Influenced by early 2000s artists including Britney Spears, the song embraces self love and empowerment. With "Imperfections", Izza takes a reflective approach sharing the pressures many of us feel on how to look based on society's expectations. The song is downtempo, honest and authentic.
Izza is carving out her own space in the music industry, and it’s clear she has the pop hooks and emotional depth to make a significant mark. Her blend of vulnerability, rebellion, and pop sensibilities is an exciting proposition for the future of mainstream pop. We chat with the singer on her latest EP, dream collaboration, and more.
Hi Izza, so happy to connect. Can you tell us more about your new EP Because I'm Blonde? Specifically about the misconceptions people have judged you on for being blonde?
It's nice to connect with you as well. My new EP Because I’m Blonde explores my identity as a blonde woman navigating relationships, self-confidence, and meaning in a world full of stereotypes. While being blonde makes me feel confident and sexy at times, I also can feel like I’m not taken seriously when it comes to dating. The insecurities of being labeled as the“fun blonde” or the girl that’s only wanted for a “good time” has made me question my appearance and its connotations. Ultimately, writing and producing this EP has taught me to celebrate my blondeness and use it as a strength.
Sonically, there are so many musical moments in the EP. Can you tell us more about your creative process? Were you aiming for a particular sound?
In my creative process, I was aiming to create upbeat high-energy songs that empower – and are addictive. “Imperfections" is more vulnerable. My aim was to balance the high energy of pop music with the vulnerability of topics such as your relationship with yourself and others.
How would you say this new EP differs from your previous releases?
My new music is a continuation of my values of being yourself and not listening to haters. My new EP focuses on self-love through the lens of my appearance and how that affects the perception of myself.
Do you have a favorite song on Because I'm Blonde? If so, which one and why?
My favorite track is “Imperfections” because it’s my first piano ballad type song. I’m excited to see how people react to it! I really love the message behind it and hope people can relate.
What do you hope fans take away from the music?
I hope it inspires my fans that they are enough. I hope that when they listen to my music, they feel confident in who they are and not pressured to be something they’re not.
You recently toured with Leah Kate. Tell our readers a funny tour story?
One funny story is: I was performing at the Amsterdam show and my metronome went into the audience speakers instead of my in-ear monitors. This video got 100,000 views!
If you could collaborate with any artist, alive or dead, who would that be and why?
I would love to work with Pharrell Williams. I love his production and innovative ideas when it comes to harmony and lyrics. I love his work with Gwen Stefani – I look up to her and would love to work with her as well. That would be a dream.
What is currently on your playlist?
I love listening to Brat by Charli XCX.
Finally, what is next for Izza?
Next, I am releasing a Christmas song in December which is a remixed version of my song “Love Bracelets” with a holiday twist. "Love Bracelets (Cartier Christmas Remix)” is about wanting material things for Christmas over relationships because nice things don’t disappoint you like people do. It’s about celebrating self-love and focusing your energy on yourself because happiness comes from loving yourself not other people. I am also working with some amazing producers for the next EP.
Thank you!
