Melbourne-based songwriter Clive Casey has just shared his debut AB singles. Called "A Country of Heartache and Blame" and "Oh Mercy", the two songs are off of his forthcoming album Pinche País, which tells the stories of the lives of characters in Australia.
With "A Country of Heartache and Blame", the artist pens a song all about the ambivalence many have with their home country. The song also touches upon a relationship that went awry and a love lost. He sings, "I think it's a shame / We played such heartless games / Through a country of heartache and blame / Baby come home," telling his love all the regrets he has from the past relationship. Musically, "A Country of Heartache and Blame" entices with lush and beautiful guitar picking, sparkly piano keys, and warm soul-baring vocals. The folk-laced rhythms bring a sonic warmth and envelopes the listener with every note.
Then there is "Oh Mercy", an indie folk lullaby all about loss, grief and the journey both metaphorically and literally. The song was influenced by a favorite novel of the artists Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. He referenced the character and his experiences with love and reunion, singing, "Planes fly over, over me/ He’s flying back to Tokyo over the Timor Sea/ Planes fly over, over me/ He sees her waiting at the window/ Blossoms in the breeze". Sonically, "Oh Mercy" features stunning vocal harmonies, emotional string arrangements and captivating guitars. The instrumentation is both intricate and soothing, often incorporating rich textures that evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing.
