Kojoson explores grief and liberation on debut EP 'TOXIC FREEDOM'

Afro-fusion artist Kojoson makes a bold entrance with his debut EP, TOXIC FREEDOM, an introspective six-track project that blends Afro-pop rhythms with Western influences, offering a deeply emotional and eclectic experience. Hailing from Accra, Ghana, and now based in the US, Kojoson weaves a rich tapestry of sound that reflects the complexities of personal freedom, love, and loss.

At the heart of the EP is “AYO,” a poignant tribute to his younger sister, whose tragic death serves as the emotional core of the project. The lyrics of "AYO" are raw and heartrending, expressing a profound grief that’s palpable in lines such as, “Come see the way I’m dead inside o” and “Every day I cry o.” The recurring chant of “Ayo” throughout the song pulls listeners into Kojoson’s anguish, as he navigates the loss of a loved one while simultaneously calling out to others who may also be grieving and going through the same experience.

The rest of the EP follows in a similarly emotive vein, with Kojoson using his signature Afro-fusion style to explore themes of liberation, emotional turbulence, and the tension between personal freedom and its consequences. The title, TOXIC FREEDOM, reflects Kojoson's internal conflict – while freedom allows him to express himself fully, it can also become overwhelming for those around him.

Overall, TOXIC FREEDOM serves as a great introduction to Kojoson’s world, and his ability to merge danceable feel-good beats with emotionally charged lyrics shows his potential as a powerful storyteller in the Afro-fusion genre. This EP is not just a collection of songs – it’s a personal statement and one that invites listeners to reflect on their own definitions of freedom and the costs that come with it.
