Arliston has released "Vertical," the second single from their upcoming album, Disappointment Machine. Following "Monks of Lindisfarne," "Vertical" continues the band's exploration of soul-searching and expansive sonic landscapes. Jack Ratcliffe and George Hasbury are here to push their creative boundaries, joined by Sam Catchpole on drums and Brett Shaw on percussion.
The track opens with intimate baritone vocals and piano keys, gradually introducing drum beats that heighten the song's depth. Within the first minute, Arliston showcases their intensity as brooding vocals transform into soaring pleas with lyrics like, "How should I know just whether I can carry on?", balancing reserved lows with passionate highs.
George recalls, “We had a lot of fun making this one. The drums started as a chopped-up sample, and then Sam re-played them, turning them into a lead drum part in the chorus. It’s a lot of fun to play live with its anthemic energy and guitar solo.” Jack adds, “I wanted to convey the hazy absent-mindedness of looking for lost items and the daunting feeling of not being able to accomplish basic tasks.” Inspired by The National, Bon Iver, and Damien Rice, Arliston’s production embodies “hardcore misery” with a hopeful twist.
