Like the honey mentioned in their new song, Welsh indie newcomers, Half Happy drip sweetly sung vocals into your ears on their new single. A diaphanous hazy summer sound features layers of melody and strummed acoustic guitar, forming a comfortable cloud that softens the anxiety-ridden lyrics. Frontwoman Rosalie Miller relays the ultimate bad work day when you’ve just had enough, “Feeling so stupid in a room / Full of holders of the future I desire / I will jump when you say higher / You treat em mean to keep em keen / But boy I’m running out of steam.”
By the second verse, the narrator is crying in their car, tears streaming down their cheeks longing for home. But instead they, “Bottle up this ride / Shove it right down, it hides / Swallow the lump in your throat.” The initial winsome and worried tone then gets blown away. Intensely pounding drums and squalling guitars whirl around like a hurricane forming. The band wraps themselves in armour, however temporary, one that hides any perceived frailty and manages to get them through another day. It’s all very literal but relatable and disarmingly honest even through the daydreaming lyrics.
