Los Angeles, California-based artist Derek Simpson is back with two new releases, "copilot" and "boytoy" which come off the heels of his last single "222."
"copilot" starts with Simpson's laidback breathy vocal runs over a solemn guitar arrangement and slowly builds up with added instrumentation comprising moody pads, pedal effected guitar licks, and rich ethereal harmonization. Here he reflects on love, self-love, and breaking free of emotional constraints. Lines like "You dance me through your R.E.M. (you’re shakin’)/New ways to say goodbye again (latro phrases)" show how expressive and somewhat abstract his songwriting can be and the touch of human element is the kicker as Simpson pours his heart on wax.
The second single “boytoy” is a playful role-playing tune that explores sexuality, and physical desires with a tongue-in-cheek viewpoint. Backed by pulsating guitars, and punchy drums, Simpson gets playful and naughty as he willingly offers himself to his lover to fulfill their desires. The lyrics are candid and have clear instructions, while Simpson's distinct vocals and layered melodies take the cake on this nostalgia-inducing sensual bedroom pop cut. The song comes with a visualizer that sees Derek playing the submissive role or a plaything for his lover's pleasure.
His third album Somehow will be released as ten consecutive singles every Thursday from June 13th to August 15th. The album examines falling in love, Somehow is a wide-eyed look at romance, identity, memory, freedom, and, ultimately, the incredible vulnerability and joy that comes from loving someone unconditionally.
