London indietronica duo high jump, aka, Harry Martin and Rick Holland, have released their highly anticipated debut EP ‘001’. The EP has already garnered significant attention and is mixed by acclaimed engineer Max Cooke. ‘001’ presents a captivating blend of lo-fi electronics, bright guitar lines, and catchy vocal melodies, creating a unique sound between electronic dream-pop and indietronica. The project began with Martin sending unsolicited demos to Holland, leading to a fruitful collaboration that culminated in this six-track collection.
high jump stated that their collection of songs is a reflection of their diverse influences and recent musical interests. They did not set out to achieve a specific sound, resulting in a blend of styles from artists like The War on Drugs, Cocteau Twins, Jai Paul, and Toro Y Moi. They take pride in the balance of intimacy and scale captured in the six tracks, which began in personal, everyday settings, but working with Max Cooke at Snap! Studios added layers of grandeur and finesse to the more ambitious sections.
Lyrically, the EP explores various layers and perspectives of over-nostalgia and its impact on appreciating the present. Written during a time of significant life decisions and changes, the songs reflect a sense of lament and resistance to change that permeates the EP.
The release of ‘001’ marks a significant milestone for high jump, establishing them as an exciting new act to watch in the indietronica landscape.
