Vancouver, Canada-born singer/songwriter Liv Averie grew up in a musical household and by the time she reached her teens, already started composing her songs and cultivating her unique sound.
After a stint in Russia as a background singer for a band, she returned to her country with a renewed vigour to pursue a solo career as an artist and moved to the city of Atlanta to realize her dreams. Her latest project is titled Ethereal EP, a 3 track body of work that is based on vulnerability, fragility, self-discovery, and introspection.
Although the project is short, it is concise and dense enough to give audiences a potpourri of emotions punctuated with heartwarming songwriting, and soul-stirring vocal runs peppered over brooding soundscapes.
The first song, “Love Is Kind,” helps set the tone with its relatable message. Coupled with an ethereal backdrop comprised of sparkling piano riffs, atmospheric pads, and sparsely arranged grooves. Here, Liv breaks down the dynamics of what true love should feel like with lines like
“We never spoke about love and the meaning/Maybe it’s something deeper than a reason”.
Liv explores the topic from an abstract perspective, expressing the view that “Love is supposed to be- kind” while maintaining that certain things should be known and need not be told. Next up is the reflective “Empath”, a warm love ballad that is introduced by a sparkling piano accompaniment and soft drum grooves.
Here, Liv leads listeners through her emotional and spiritual journey. Starting from the views of a child to her modern-day self, audiences are given a glimpse of her personal growth and how her experiences reshaped her thinking. From attaining self-awareness and coming to terms with the way the world works and humans interact, Liv gives audiences a panoramic view of love and life from an empathic position.
The final track, “Intrapersonal,” is anchored on the premise of balancing one’s strengths and weaknesses against external forces. The production is in the same vein of modern-day soul/jazz-infused soundscapes with an experimental touch to it.
Here, Liv looks within to find her true North with lines like
“Been holding it too long/it's been growing like a cancer/ so come on, come on,”
and sums it up on the motivational chorus urging womenfolk to own their strengths and walk with their heads up high.
Overall, Ethereal, lives up to its name with its cohesive and seamlessly arranged soundscapes and insightful subject matter. Each track is perfectly crafted to fit the topic and Liv’s distinct vocal performance cuts through the mix with every line. We highly recommend this as it's a solid addition to one's future/experimental R&B playlist.
