Lauren Mia delivered her first full body of work, RE:BIRTH, in the fall of 2023. The release of her debut album marked the completion of her cosmic Saturn return, propelling her into a new decade of life. Featuring 10 artists eager to share their reimaginations of RE:BIRTH’s tracks, Lauren Mia has released RE:BIRTH Remixes.
The remix album boasts contributions from Alfa Romero, Aalson, Anakim, Binaryh, Clawz SG, Fat Cosmoe, Manti, OIBAF, SKALA, and Zieze – all of whom expertly weave their distinct identities to complement her original works.
RE:BIRTH was met with a resoundingly warm reception, earning support from top names in Lauren’s soundscape, including Innellea, Kevin De Vries, Joris Voorn, Camelphat, Lane 8, Vintage Culture, and Above & Beyond, among others. The 13-track album saw the multi-instrumentalist and composer apply her distinct signature sound to styles outside her roots in melodic techno and progressive house, showcasing her aptitudes for genres like hard techno and psytrance.
Following the recent release of her first original single of 2024, “Frisson,” Lauren Mia is preparing to deliver a 2-track EP entitled ‘Spectral Reverie’ in June. As Lauren continues to release new, original music, 'RE:BIRTH Remixes' serve to remind listeners of her recent full body of work with a fresh set of ears.
In an exclusive with EARMILK, all of RE:BIRTH Remixes contributors have shared their take on their selected reimagination of Lauren Mia's original tracks.
Fat Cosmoe on "Saturn Return" (Fat Cosmoe Remix)
I feel really glad and honored to work with Lauren for the remix of her album – It was such a great pleasure to work on "Saturn Return". At the first listen I totally fell in love with the vocal line and wanted to do a remix that moved into his powerful emotion to be a bit more of a groovy vibe. I also added chords to transpose a bit of his emotion more in a diffrent way from the original that totally catched me at first listening.
I added an energic vibe synth that moved more in the indie dance style, and then back to that climax emotional to explode in the drop with a powerful stab to escalate the track. I started to work on it in my favorite country, Japan, sitting in the crossline of Shibuya and I was totally inspired by the place to make the principal line of the synth.
Anakim on "Mortemerre" (Anakim Remix)
I’ve been friends with Lauren for quite some time now. We came up together in the LA scene, so when she asked me if I wanted to be a part of the remix package I said yes, instantly. After listening to her album, "Mortemerre" was the track that spoke loudest to me. I fell in love with its incredible production and the sentimental story behind it.
I knew that if I had the shot at remixing it I’d try to make my version as fierce and big as I could. I wanted to create something that destroyed dance floors in the best way possible, from the club level to festivals. Having been able to test the track out at multiple clubs in the US, as well as the massive Volkswagen Arena in Istanbul, I think I accomplished just that as it’s now the most requested track in my sets.
Binaryh on “Shadow” (Binaryh Remix)
It was really enjoyable working on this Remix. Firstly, because we really admire Lauren’s work. We chose a track that had a beautiful vocal to incorporate a new harmony without losing identity. We are very happy with the result and honored to be able to work with Lauren.
Zieze on “Ceremony” (Zieze Remix)
I wanted to express how much of a pleasure it was for me to craft the remix for Lauren's track "Ceremony." Her original piece has this deep and celestial quality to it that truly transports the listener to another realm, akin to the profound experience of an ayahuasca ceremony. Having undergone a DMT ceremony myself a few years back, I immediately resonated with the vibe of your track from the moment I began working on it.
It felt like an honor to reinterpret such a powerful composition. In my remix, I aimed to infuse it with a techno twist, incorporating deep basslines, groovy percussion, and a sprinkle of acid sounds. While I wanted to create something distinctly different from the original, I made sure to retain those special elements that make her track so unique. It was an incredibly enriching journey, and I hope my remix does justice to the spirit of "Ceremony."
Aalson on "Ashes In Paradise" (Aalson Remix)
Lauren and myself have been friends for a long time. After a few years talking about music and sharing some technical tips, she did an awesome remix of my track "Oddes". So, when she asked me to work on a remix for her album, it was obvious that I was going to accept it. After listening to the whole album, I really had a crush on "Ashes In Paradise".
The first thing that caught my attention was all these random vocals shots. It immediately made me think that I could use them to build a mental and intense atmosphere. Then, I just heard this crazy synth Lauren did for the drop. Hell, this one would definitely be the main element of my vision. So, I just took these two elements, and I built a whole new atmosphere around, keeping in mind that I needed to do my best to put these original elements in the center of my version.
Finally, working on my own atmosphere, the breakdown’s melancholy just came to my mind, I wrote it and I finally had a very personal version of ‘Ashes in Paradise’, but keeping the strength of the original. My remix is now a big part of all my live set on every stage, and it always has a big impact on the crowd. I’m now super excited to reveal it to everyone.
SKALA on “Saturn Return” (SKALA Remix)
I was honored when my dear friend Lauren Mia asked me to create a remix for her debut album. I really loved the original track's glitchy synths, and that sparked my creativity for the remix. The original song had a very soft vocal, so I decided to mix things up by adding some rough, distorted sounds to create a different vibe.
To make the remix truly my own, I only listened to the original a few times before diving straight into working with the stems. My idea was to turn it into a breakbeat track, which is quite a change from the original's progressive style. This whole process was about blending my personal touch with the original, making a remix that feels both familiar and fresh.
Alfa Romero on “Shadow” (Alfa Romero Remix)
This remix has been one heck of a ride! We've been vibing off the original track's energy and adding our own flavor to it, creating something totally fresh and exciting. Our goal with this remix was to give a nod to the original while injecting our own personality into it. We wanted listeners to feel like they're hearing the song in a whole new way, while still recognizing its roots.
Working on this remix has been a blast. We've been bouncing ideas back and forth, getting inspired by the original track's vibe, and putting our own spin on it every step of the way. We can't wait to share this remix with everyone! We hope it gets people moving and grooving, and maybe even sparks a few new ideas of their own. Cheers to the journey!
Clawz SG on “Olim” (Clawz SG Remix)
I was very touched when Lauren asked me to remix one of the tracks from her album. I have followed Lauren since the beginning and we have often exchanged musically for several years, so it seemed obvious to me to work on a remix for her. My choice naturally fell on Milo because I could feel a lot of emotions in this title and I was immediately hooked on the break with its long, very captivating pads. Knowing the story behind this title I tried to bring out all these emotions even more strongly by adding additional melodies while having a groove and a very incisive bass.
MANTi on "Lakshmi" (MANTi Remix)
Lauren approached me to contribute to her remix album, I was genuinely excited. Having heard some of the tracks from her album beforehand, I was already impressed by vision. So, being invited to be a part of it was a no-brainer for me. I couldn't wait to add my own twist to her work. "Lakshmi" instantly caught my attention.
Its unique blend of ethereal melody and vocals really resonated with me. After speaking with Lauren and learning that this track held a special place in her heart as well, I knew I wanted to take on the challenge of remixing it. Doing this remix was a great experience for me. It allowed me to delve deep into the essence of the original track while also exploring new sounds. With my version of the remix, I aimed to amplify the energy of the track while staying true to its core elements. I wanted to create a dynamic, percussive-driven rendition while still honoring the emotion of Lauren's original composition.
OIBAF on "Fidelity" (OIBAF Remix)
I accepted this awesome remix opportunity, that it seemed like a great chance to further develop my friendship and working relationship with Lauren and what better way than remixing a wonderful original that is part of something as special as her album. I liked the essence of the track, it says a lot about her personal sound, the processing of the elements, and how emotional she is telling stories behind her instruments.
That's why, as soon as I heard this track, I didn't think twice; I put it on repeat mode and started to think about how to give it my touch and turn it into a dance floor track. I had a lot of fun starting it while on tour in Latin America and finished it just returning to my studio in Madrid earlier this year. I've been able to test it several times in a club and I'm very happy with it.
