mega cat is a new instrumental collaboration by Aaron Benson (drums, percussion, guitar), Kim West (piano and synthesizer) and Ryan Devlin (bass and guitar) whose work in the Seatle live scene has garnered them some notoriety. Now, the Seattle-based band just released their debut self-titled album on both digital and vinyl and in the interim, they return with the visuals for the single "Rat Fight". The track's title is inspired by a real-life experience witnessed by Kim and Devlin while walking home at night. The pair came across a battle between two large brown rats and were enthralled by their sheer viciousness akin to the song they were working on and Voilà the title stuck. The track is a rousing affair that takes elements from a wide range of musical sources such as 70’s Afro Beat, avant jazz, a dash of hip-hop sensibility and experimental soft rock. The driven beat is highly syncopated, edgy and progressive while the layered instrumentation builds up with much intensity with a heavy reliance on anthemic brass stabs, triumphant horns, cinematic flutes and pulsating basslines. The accompanying visual directed by Cheryl Ediss employs expressive choreography that taps into the energy of the song and the dancer moves gracefully across the dimly lit basement like an apparition possessed by music.

For live performances, the band is joined by Dave Dederer (Presidents of the United States of America) on guitar and Jacob Whinihan (La Fonda) on percussion. Ryan and Kim both play in the Seattle-based band Smokey Brights.
