In Gouldian Finch's debut album, Hatch, Martin Horntveth who is known for his influential roles in Jaga Jazzist and The National Bank, crafts a musical tapestry that defies easy categorisation. “Hatch" is a testament to Horntveth's genre-defying vision, offering a rich, immersive experience that pushes artistic boundaries.
"Like a Magnet" opens with infectious melodies, reminiscent of 2000s house, creating a dreamlike ambiance with skillful male-female vocal interplay. The focus track, "Breathe", featuring Loney, Dear, is a symphonic masterpiece, blending strings, synths and dynamic drums. "The Flamingo" explores a darker, soulful pop approach, while instrumental tracks like “Natas Kaupas” explores upbeat percussion and synth improvisation melodies. There's some unique vocal accompaniments throughout the album and no shortage of genres that make the project completely different to anything else out there right now.
Martin talks on his project, "I've been contemplating creating this album since the early 2000s, but the process has always been interrupted by some better-paying gig or project. Most importantly, I've spent a lot of time trying to "land" on a sound that would encompass everything. It was only when I decided to put everything I love into the same pot that it clicked, and it made sense to release the music."
