Prolific Toronto artist and emcee, Lex Leosis, returns with a new single "Minor Setback" which explores her recent travails. After releasing two singles earlier this year, she was prepping her album for a summer release but an unfortunate ATV accident in Iceland left her with broken ribs and a punctured lung, and her original plans for 2023 were placed on hold. After months of recuperating, Lex is now back in tip-top shape and gifts us with this heartfelt and reflective single that serves as a form of comeback.
Over Richmond, VA producer, Tee-WaTT's laidback and solemn piano-driven backdrop, Lex talks about life's hurdles and obstacles that tried to knock her down but her indomitable spirit says otherwise. Here, lines like "Three bills down with roaches in the kitchen/And eviction notice sitting in on my living room floor/And I feel like giving up some days/And others feel like I gotta give way more" shed light on her former community at Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood who had issues with the building's landlord and property management company, the residents banded together to collectively fight against wrongful evictions after the pandemic. Though it felt like a hopeless situation at times, the community didn't back down and were successfully able to defend their homes.
The accompanying visual has a psychedelic feel and the use of bright animation and live performance works well too and gives it an overall warm feeling.
