Austin based four-piece MAMAHAWK have just unveiled a jazzy and funk-fueled single. Called "Blue Jay", the song is released alongside a quirky and fun lyric video made by filmmaker John Valley. The track is the highlight off of the band’s recently released album A Diamond Shy.
With “Blue Jay”, MAMAHAWK write a song all about seduction and rollercoaster relationships that are full of highs and lows. Lyrics including, “Never an ending / One hit leads to another / Can I come over?” show that he knows it’s a cycle but he can’t break free from the romanticization and allure of the back and forth relationship. Sonically, “Blue Jay” is a dynamic release filled with psychedelic guitar riffs, sporadic drum beats, and funky basslines. Layered vocals sing enticing melodies over keytar riffs for a unique and appealing listen. MAMAHAWK blends so many genres in this transformative single including pop, rock, Jazz, funk and soul. The accompanied music video shows the band performing and slices of lyrics across the screen while a blue jay flies randomly. The music video parallels the bands funk loving and quirky image perfectly.
MAMAHAWK is four-piece Adam, James, Brennan and Mario. The musical collective has found success in just a few years opening for the likes of well known bands including Black Pumas. Their album A Diamond Shy was created during the pandemic and showcases a much warmer sound.
