Nigerian-German artist Kelvyn Colt questions society through stylized bars and rhythmic melodies on latest release, “TRUTH.” The accompanying visual depicts the rapper as a patient of a dark science experiment. He is restrained by physicians as he tries to escape.
“TRUTH” has an ambient hip-hop beat with reverberated bass. His verses are quick with a subtle vocalization. His voice builds into the chorus as he sings, “When I see the truth, yeah.” He effortlessly delivers each verse with passion and confidence. The beat has an atmospheric sound, blending trance and rap to create a satisfying ode to realism.
Colt describes the track, “In Plato’s cave allegory, the subjects see shadows moving but perceive them to be the reality, but what happens if one dares to question our interpretation of reality? Of our relationships, friends, and business partners? We run the risk of suddenly seeing it all, including ourselves, for what we truly are. In ‘TRUTH’ I write, rap, and sing about exactly that. I don’t just look anymore but I truly see and as freeing as it is, it is painful but necessary.” With his introspective lyricism and modern sound, the genre-bending artist is bringing a fresh perspective to today’s hip-hop.
