Singer Kenyon Dixon puts a modern spin on a classic R&B sound on latest release, “2000s R&B.” Channeling the decade’s dramatic visuals, the accompanying video shows the singer belting out vocals in the pouring rain for a sensual ode to his predecessors. He leans on the hood of a luxury car as rain drips from his jacket with an effortless charm.
“When you think about 2000s R&B, if rain and leather doesn’t pop in your head then it’s not 2000s R&B,” he shares. The single has a soulful beat equipped with booming bass and a subtle guitar melody. The artist’s vocals fluctuate from high to low with a calculated rhythm. Each verse bounces along with the beat describing love and heartbreak. He sings, “Said we’d be forever, ever, ever / Guess you went and found somebody better.”
Following the video’s release, the vocalist shares his highly anticipated project, The R&B You Love. With each track, he reminisces on every era of the genre while creating a sound all his own. Pulling inspiration from his upbringing, he reflects on being the child of two ministers. “Not being able to listen to secular music, R&B was a form of rebellion. It’s the closest thing to church music, but I don’t want to do gospel. It really does feel like validated rebellion,” he continues, “R&B is really just, it’s what happens when church kids rebel.”
The 17-track album delivers both heartfelt love ballads and upbeat serenades. His vocals are smooth and expressive with a hint of nostalgia. Kenyon Dixon builds on the fundamental concepts of R&B’s past while rejuvenating its sound for the future.
