Calgary-based artist Defunk weaves through his story of personal and sonic evolution on his first full-length album in almost 10 years The Voyage. Featuring the likes of Taylr Renee, ERO808, Liinks, and more, we’re offered a seamless fusion of funk, hip-hop, electro, and bass music on the expansive 14-track project, making for a heartfelt listening experience.
Opening with strong yet soulful piano notes of “The Departure,” before moving up to an anthemic feel built on bold beats, soaring instrumentals and echoing backing vocals on “Blast Off,” the album immediately establishes its balance between soothing tones and powerful style.
Standouts like “Fall Apart,” and “Coming in Hot,” get you grooving along before the pulsating energy of “Whiplash,” and “Losing It,” take over to pack a punch.
The second half of the album brims with softer tones and transportive soundscapes. From the atmospheric sensibilities of “Waves,” to the emotive touches of “Sacrifice,” the project shifts effortlessly and immerses us in intricate sonic worlds.
The mood picks up to become gritty and anthemic once again at the tail end with soaring productions like “All Your Love,” “Coming Back Down,” before offering yet another highlight in the form of hypnotic and haunting “Stay.”
Final tracks “The Return,” and “Sunrise,” offer up last-minutes bursts of vibrance and energy that leaves us wanting more from the emotive but bright musical experience that drew us in from the first notes.
Yet another showcase of his versatility, the explorative album reinforces the stronghold that Defunk has within the niche of bass music.
