London-based singer-songwriter Maria Wilman is doing something that many people would be too afraid to do. At the age of 50, she has decided to finally pursue her long life dream of releasing music and her first endeavor is the incredible 12-track release, Dark Horse. As she makes this bold decision she ponders the question of what it was within her that urged her to follow through with this. Delving into the depths of her mind and other unknown and unexplored territories, Wilman revels in realization that life is never linear.
Dark Horse includes songs such as “Full Circle” which specifically examines this ideology of the meandering lives we lead. The songwriter shares, “Sometimes we write songs that echo back a message we didn’t quite get at the beginning. It repeats itself like a mantra. Love was there from the beginning, spinning in an ever-ending eternal sequence, interrelating everything. As you keep trusting your heart…”
Then there is “Lovegrass” which tells a particularly interesting story about another woman also named Maria Wilman. The songwriter set out on a mission to uncover more about this woman, who lived 100 years ago, discovering that she was a pioneer and left a massive legacy.
Sonically reminiscent of the likes of The Pretenders meets Sharon van Etten, Wilman blends the past with the present to create a sound which is familiar yet uniquely her own. Unveiling Dark Horse now, after all these years, it is evident that it was certainly worth the wait. Wilman shares, “I think time is irrelevant in the process. It doesn’t matter whether you arrive when you’re in your 20s or your 50s, as long as you get there.”
