Rising north-east act Sarah Johnsone delves into the story of the misunderstood on “Sofia,” which features alluring vocals that float atop a spacey and hypnotic soundscape. Striking a balance between being a fun, party anthem and the vulnerability of being dismayed in pursuit of romance, the track is rooted in a signature defiant indie rock sensibility.
With a punchy instrumentation complimented by poignant storytelling, the track is “the tale of the misunderstood and perennially addictive ‘cool’ girl who cookie cutter male chasers that can’t seem to get enough.”
Speaking of the track, Johnsone said,“Sofia represents many who are misunderstood by the male social structures around them. The song flicks between a ‘beammeupsoftboi’ style account of the male fumbling attempt of seduction, and Sofia’s contempt for them.”
Channelling themes of alienation juxtaposed by soulful sonics spanning everything from jazz and soul to R&B and blues, Johnsone has established herself as a bold talent who touches on social dynamics with a wisdom which belies her years.
