Cat Janice evaluates the ins and outs of human emotions in ‘Modern Medicine’

Virginia-born and bred artist Cat Janice has been concocting her own unique sound of what she calls ‘sizzle pop’ and is now unveiling her new nine-track album, Modern Medicine. Taking a deep dive into who we are as humans and all the weird and wonderful things that trigger our emotions, the debut album both sonically and thematically packs a punch. The music is fun and dance-worthy, infusing you with vitality and vivacity, almost disguising the more somber and thought-provoking lyrics.

Modern Medicine touches on a lot of heavy yet real and raw themes, covering everything from the artist’s ongoing battle with cancer, navigating a divorce, and the loss of a close friend and the general rollercoaster of life. As the songwriter reflects on all these moments in her life, she realizes the power and importance of living in the moment.

“Who Do You Think You Are” speaks about the process of falling in love, and wanting to press pause on the first few months of dating, where butterflies fill your stomach. Janice shares,  “I had just gotten back from spending hours in a basement studio, laughing and singing with him for a TikTok video. I got home and in an instant, the song started coming to me. Falling in love that way is thrilling, scary, and borderline emotionally sedative. We joke about how whenever we are together now, we always feel tired and sleepy because of all of the happy hormones.”

Listening to Modern Medicine is like exploring the intricacies of the songwriter's life, as she allows us into some of her most vulnerable moments. The album is like a warming hug and reminder that we’re all going through this crazy life together.
