Singer-songwriter, Merrick Winter, returns with some of his moodiest and emotive work to date, “Try Me”. Featuring his longing vocals that hold a sense of hope, an acoustic guitar follows his melody throughout to create a simple yet effective acoustic indie pop track. The track is a deeply heartfelt affair with Winter’s trademark layered guitars perfectly fusing with his harmonic, yearning vocals and further cements the American-born, London-based artist and producer’s status as a bonafide musician from the inside out.
Merrick's lyrics paint a vivid picture of a young man entangled in both internal and external conflicts within his environment. The imagery portrays a fractured relationship with his parents, their instability causing the narrator to take matters into his own hands. He expresses, "teaches them a lesson" and reveals the unsettling truth of having a "gun in my hand". This poignant tale reflects a sad reality that resonates with many, as it unfolds through the perspective of this young boy.
Merrick Winter explains about the track – “‘Try Me’ is a song about the wave of successive school shootings that have swept across America since I was a child. So often the perpetrators are kids. Recently I discovered that a similar tragedy had happened in my hometown after I left, and suddenly the narrative became very real, very personal. It deeply affected my community, and really got under my skin. I wanted to write a song that explored how it might happen in any small town in America, but I wanted to do it with empathy – to just imagine for myself how it could have gone so wrong.”
