Mathame shares exclusive thoughts on debut album 'MEMO' [Exclusive]

Italian-brother duo Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli AKA Mathame have released their long-awaited debut album MEMO. Released via Astralwerks, MEMO takes listeners on a 13-track interstellar journey exploring the human experience and traversing divine realms.

‘MEMO’ is an exemplar of the multi-faceted quality of the duo’s signature sound, evoking a sense of introspection and euphoria whether experienced on the dancefloor or in solitude.  They have been touring an epic Audio-Visual experience to enhance their live shows and further showcase the depth of their musical skillsets.

Sharing on the record, Mathame shares, "MEMO is a device that allows us to recall our experiences from the past three years, comparable to a black box for flights. All the tracks have different stories, some of the tracks took one day to create, others took months. When there was something that we felt was meaningful and emotional to say, we collected these ideas. The full album as a result is a cinema-esque journey through our memories of making the record.”

MEMO takes listeners on a journey into the last three years of the Mathame experience, serving as a log of the duo’s memories and emotions since the album’s inception. Largely attributed to their extensive backgrounds as a classical violinist and award-winning film director, Mathame’s cinematic style melodies draw inspiration from classical film scores, movies, pop culture, art, their everyday life experiences, and sci-fi dreams.

In a track-by-track, Mathame picks 5 highlights off of MEMO to share some exclusive thoughts on for EARMILK.

_____

"UNREALITY" ft. Small Black

"What you listen to today is the very first version of ‘Unreality’. It’s one of the first tracks we composed for the album. The intro of this track starts out very eerie and mysterious. It gives off a nocturnal vibe and it’s definitely reflective of us composing it during the late night."

"WHO" ft. Lyke

‘The composition of ‘WHO’ is a composer’s ‘trick on the harmony’ as we like to refer to it. The melody and harmonies are on different measures, so there is a sense of never-ending, and always changing vibes during the track. The beginning of the harmony is not the beginning of the melody and thus, they match in an unconventional, yet intentional effect. The lyrics are intended to be intimate and self-questioning. And the imagery of this track correlates to our touring during the summer, always moving and meeting new people along the way. The days move fast, but we try to take it stop by stop.’

"THE DOORS" ft. Biishop

"We made this one in Argentina, before our first show in Buenos Aires. Nocturnal and dark vibes to start this one, and they give way to that main synth and we loved testing this one – the first time was at Mandarine Park in Buenos Aires. The composition approach was unique, as Biishop sent us the vocals first and we found the magic after. The voice of Biishop in this track is deep and intense, yet emotional and resonates well on the dance floor."

"RUN BOY"

"We wanted to incorporate this story of this boy running to someone..to you. A love theme underneath. This track is an ode to the sun and lights, wind in your face on a warm summer day. We always approached the making of this one as more of a listening track, rather than a dance track. Because ultimately, it’s an emotional composition and we’ll never forget closing this track with the whole team together."

"THERE IS A LIGHT"

"Our intro for one year and a half, we made this one in September 2021 before Sonus Festival in Croatia. The vocals, from the original poem by Charles Bukowski and spoken by Tom O’Bedlam, are read like a suspenseful tale that hooks you into the hero’s journey. Themes of hope, darkness, and light to the fire."
